Saturday Update 5/25/13

Hello hope everyone is enjoying a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend. We should start this week by taking a moment to honor and remember those who have gone ahead of us…..also the brave Men and Women who defend this great nation of our and allow us to be able to enjoy the freedoms we enjoy….Thank You!

This week I took a couple extra vacation days from the primary job to stretch the weekend into a 5 day weekend and since we had a wedding for an extended family member today, I made my sawdust on Friday this week. I had a few stops to make early then made it to the shop around one. This week was dedicated to working on the Anniversary Clocks. Over the week I cut out the brackets for the Wall Clock and one of the lower backs for the Wall Clock. Once I got to the shop I prepped the wood for the roof panels for both clocks, the Wall Clock being a glue-up.

Saturday Update 5/18/13

Hope everyone had a great Saturday. All is well on this end. It was a really warm day here…but it sure felt nice to sweat in the shop! I have to start off today by giving an update on our lost dog Bleu from last week. We spent a lot of Sunday looking for him also with no luck. It was about 7:00 Sunday evening and the cute little neighbor girl brought Tammy a handful of dandelions and greenery to cheer her up because her Mom had seen the postings on facebook. Tam went out and talked to that neighbor and the one across the street and about an hour later the neighbor from across the street had found a posting of a found dog on the community page for our town. It was Bleu! So Tam called and we went over and picked him up. He had made it less than 1/2 mile before they found him and took him in….and spoiled him all weekend. When we got there and all took turns holding him….big tears were rolling down his face. I’ve never seen an animal cry before. You can see the tears in the picture. Glad to have him home.

Saturday Update 5/11/13

Hello…hope everyone had a great Saturday. I want to start by wishing all the Mom’s out there a Wonderful and Happy Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day Mom…..I Love You. Also to Tammy….Thank You for being an incredible Mom to our kids and I Love you as well. Be sure and give your Mom a hug for us at Wilckens Woodworking.

The weather was nice here today but breezy. I had to turn on the fans today….but I’m not complaining. It wasn’t snowing! My day started off by our dogs getting out and one of them ran off. So after looking and looking with no luck it was off to the shop. My heart wasn’t in it today and I struggled most of the day. Had a close call on the table saw early on….just wasn’t thinking clearly. I still have all my fingers but felt the blade…it was that close. I was cutting up the wood for the floor/lids trim for the Memorial Box and I had just enough 1/8″ walnut to do it….well I cut one board (2 trim boards) about an 1/16″ too short. So I planed down a piece to get enough. Stepped back and took a deep breath and things got better. I was able to get all the wood prepped for the trim and then my Daughter & Granddaughter stopped by    🙂   . After they left I got all the trim cut, sanded, assembled to the floor/lids, re-sanded, gaps filled and final sanded.

Saturday Update 5/4/13

Hello…Hope everyone had a great week and an awesome Saturday. It was a crazy weather week here with 80’s Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday then SNOW on Thursday and Friday. Today was a damp, cool overcast day and had to run the heaters most of the day….in May! This last week for homework I had the lower and upper Memorial Box overlays, the mid lid and top lid overlays for the Memorial Box, the lower and upper brackets for the Memorial Box, the side and front head overlays for the Anniversary clocks and a wedding gift. I made it through all of these except half the Anniversary clock head front overlay and half of the wedding gift….so a very productive week.
My Saturday started with making a princess wand for my Granddaughter…..Tammy bought her one last weekend and the dog knocked it out of her hand and shattered it so papa saved the day. Then I had special helper come over and help me today….Kishna, my Daughter. I am working on the Memorial Box for her Aunt and she came over to see it and help with it. It is a two story box. The lower box will be a sealed box for everyone to put notes and or knick knacks and the upper box with be for her Urn. I suggested Kishna cut out some small hearts for the kids to decorate and the adults can write a short message on. My motive being that way I could show her how to scroll saw….and she did a wonderful job. I didn’t get much done during that time…..too busy watching and smiling. After she got them (21 of them) cut out, I showed her how to sand them. We also got all the lower and upper overlays sanded and glued on. I learned something very important today at the shop….and if you never listen to any other tip I throw out, remember this one….It’s not about how much sawdust you make, but the memories you make while making the sawdust. There are alot of wonderful memories in that shop, but today ranks right up towards the top. Thanks for a special day at the shop Kishna…..
